What are the Warning Symptoms of a Dryer Fire?
CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission), UL. (Underwriters Laboratory), NFPA, Fire Marshals and
Appliance Manufactures all agree... The
#1 cause of residential and commercial Dryer Fires:  is "Lack of
Maintenance!"
Even  if  You're  meticulous  about  cleaning your dryer's filter before or after every load,
the fact is that no dryer filter is 100%,  there  is
'always some'    lint that flows through your lint filter.
Otherwise there could be NO air flow at all! The lint that by-passes your filter is damp and adheres to the
insides  of  your unit  and duct system.  This  collection of  lint throughout your dryer and duct system is
termed in the  industry as  "Lint  Cholesterol".  Unlike your lint filter, which can be easily wiped cleaned with
a stroke of  the hand, its just simply  NOT  that  easy for the
"INSIDE"  of your dryer or its duct system!!
Fires start  "inside"  your dryer where 'lint cholesterol' is at its peak...
Silent,  Waiting  and  Unseen!

Is YOUR Family at Risk?

Consider this:  'Lint Cholesterol'  always  produces back  pressure in your  dryer's exhaust system...Always!
Have You noticed lately, that a "normal" wash load is now taking longer to dry? Perhaps a 'double' run?
Does your dryer  exhaust up through the
"Roof" ?    Does  the  dryer  itself  feel  excessively warm to hot?
Has your electric / fuel costs risen considerably in the last 6 - 8 months?  Your dryer, if electric, uses more
electricity on average than any other household appliance per kilowatt hour in the year! The exception  being
an electric range.  Our point... The longer it runs,  the more it costs to run.  Most architect designs for
NEWER homes and Condos,  place laundry rooms interior and centrally located, requiring
elaborate dryer
ducting systems
. Lateral runs of six (6) feet or more, are harbors for "Lint Cholesterol"!  Exhaust systems
thirty (30) feet or more, with up to six (6) elbows, are NOT UNCOMMON!  But a Deadly combination,
without Maintenance,  for Sure!

Let's review the Symptoms of "Lint Cholesterol" again:

  • Dryer vent Exhausts up through ceiling, attic and "Roof" or long lateral runs
  • The Smell of cloth burning or smoking
  • Dryer itself "feels" excessively warm / hot to the touch
  • Increased drying times from usual:
average commercial time = 20 - 30 min.*
average residential time = 30 - 40 min.*
NEVER more than 50 min.
* Fuel/electric, make/size, will vary times.
  • Demand for fuel/electric increased
  • NO Maintenance Program in force for over a year.

NEVER TAKE THESE WARNING SYMPTOMS FOR GRANTED OR ASSUME YOUR DRYER OR
EXHAUST SYSTEM IS SAFE!  IT'S JUST NOT WORTH THE RISK...LOVED ONES
HAVE BEEN
KILLED BY THIS 'SILENT KILLER'...  NEEDLESSLY!

Here's a closer look.
The motor is on the
right... covered in lint.
Without sufficient air
flow it will soon
overheat. The more
serious problem is
why is there so much
lint build-up?
Here's a
residential home
unit we serviced
recently. With
the front panel
off, can you
identify the
motor of this
dryer?
We received this service call from a Port St. Lucie customer complaining of 'prolonged drying times'. She
said she would run a "normal" wash load at least "twice" through a drying cycle and at times the clothes
"
STILL" were not totally dry!
Anytime there is this much lint build-up your chances for a fire are about 100%. Very dangerous! Lint
build-up here
inside her machine is a sure indication of "lint cholesterol" throughout her entire duct system.
This customer's dryer duct system exhausts up through the roof. Examine closely the results of our service
after cutting open the duct system. Feel free to 'click' on thumbnails below.
This is where "lint cholesterol" starts.
And this is where it ended!
Notice there is light at the end of this tunnel, but because of so much back pressure, lint was being forced
back into the dryer itself. This was a two foot section taken from twenty feet through the roof. Thankfully,
the heating unit itself was defective, therefore only generating a fraction of its normal output and resulted in
No fire! The heater assembly and entire exhaust system were replaced, unit cleaned and returned to
service... Drying time cut to 40 minutes! Needless to say, maintenance worked, we all were winners!!
